May 2017 is Mental Health Awareness Month! And the awesome Child Mind Institute is fighting to end the stigma around childhood mental health by posting a video EVERYDAY this month of a celebrity who struggled with either a learning disability and/or a mental health disorder as a child.
And I can't tell you how much this warms my heart. As someone who has witnessed many kids live through various adverse life events, struggle with learning issues, this is such a shame-buster and hope-instiller to combat fundamental societal myths and stereotypes that undermine children's self-esteem and prevent their authentic selves from growing. I hope that every kid who may need a "feelings doctor" never has to feel like others will perceive them as "crazy" for seeking mental health counseling. I also hope that every parent and teacher may always hold hope for that child who struggles with academics, particularly reading (did you know that dyslexia is the most commonly diagnosed learning disability?), and see the WHOLE CHILD, not just what they can't do as well as other kids. There are many battles to fight in this world, some impossible, but this one is absolutely and critically possible. Help spread the word!
